  Bronxville PO/Yonkers

 What does "Bronxville PO/Yonkers" mean?

This is probably the most frequently asked question I get from people new to the area. The answer is simple. We are located in East Yonkers, but the post office that serves us is located in the Village of Bronxville; therefore we have a Bronxville mailing address. Over the years to eliminate any confusion with the Village proper, the moniker Bronxville PO/Yonkers came into use. It is not unique in Westchester; another example is Scarsdale PO/New Rochelle. The following map of the 10708 zip code shows the Bronxville PO/Yonkers neighborhood on the left outlined in red, and the Village of Bronxville to the right.

The Bronxville PO neighborhood has many similar characteristics to the Village of Bronxville, albeit at lower prices. Much of the area was developed by the Lawrence family (Lawrence Park Properties being a precursor to Houlihan Lawrence). Once Bronxville Village was developed, the Lawrence family began to develop East Yonkers in the first decade of the 20th century. The residential community of Lawrence Park West was the result.

The Lawrence family also founded Sarah Lawrence College, located on Bronxville Road, a popular Liberal Arts College. Many famous professors have lectured at Sarah Lawrence over the decades, and it has produced many notable persons including Rahm Emanuel, President Obama's Chief of Staff.

Homes in the Bronxville PO neighborhood are beautifully designed with large lots, plentiful green space, and narrow winding country lanes. This ad published roughly a hundred years ago is a bit difficult to read, but is evocative of the philosophy of the Lawrence family and their desire to build a community that embraced the natural contour of the land and integrated homes into nature.

In the mid 1920's a boom in apartment house construction began. As was common practice at the time buildings were constructed close to the train and major roads. With the construction of the Bronx River Parkway, America's first divided highway in the mid 1920's, easy access to Manhattan became possible and the market boomed. True to the taste of the time, most buildings were designed in the Tudor style, with high ceilings, large rooms and many prewar details. These properties remain extremely desirable and are sought after by new residents.

Today, the neighborhood is extremely popular with people moving out of New York City. Grand Central is a short 30 minute commute from either the Bronxville or Fleetwood Metro North stations, and most of the neighborhood is in walking distance to the train. Shopping is plentiful, with neighborhood shopping on Pondfield Road West and Bronx River Rd. The Village of Bronxville and the Hamlet of Fleetwood are also close by.

The following map illustrates a one-half mile radius from the Sarah Lawrence College campus, located in the heart of the Bronxville PO neighborhood. It is an easy walk to shopping, Metro North and other amenities in Bronxville Village.

The Bronxville PO neighborhood offers the convenience of suburban life combined with beautiful homes and classic 1920's pre war apartments.
